The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) has prompted many people to consider what more they can do to make a positive difference to the environment. The conference has highlighted the need for all of us to do what we can to try to live a life that helps, rather than harms the planet. Saving rainwater is an effortless, effective way of protecting valuable resources, at the same time as helping to preserve delicate ecosystems in areas that are vulnerable to water shortages such as the area in and around the Northern Rivers.

In this article we take a look at the advantages that water conservation, in particular the use of rainwater tanks, can benefit the environment. We also consider the local climate here in Northern Rivers, looking at why November and December are great months to consider installing a rainwater tank before the heavy rain begins. Finally, we look at some of our high-grade polythene or steel rainwater tanks.

Why Conserve Water?

It goes without saying that in an area that suffers from drought as much as Northern Rivers, it makes sense to make sure that any rainfall that does take place is harvested and used for activities that might normally be completed using precious mains water. Here we take a look at some of the reasons many people are opting to fit rainwater tanks.

Save Money and Potentially Qualify for a Grant

Tap water costs money, rainwater doesn't! If you can use rainwater for washing the car, watering the garden or topping up your pool, it means you won't have to pay for water. What's not to like about free? In addition, residents of Rous County (including Lismore, Byron Bay and Murwillumbah residents) may qualify for a grant to put towards their rainwater tank.

Enjoy the Benefits of Natural, Additive-Free Water

Unlike tap water, rainwater doesn't contain the chemicals used to purify water. Whilst it's unwise to drink rainwater (particularly when it's collected as runoff from the roof), many people prefer to use it to water their plants.

Increase the Value of your Property

A rainwater tank is an added asset to your property, which could mean its price increases. Also, a growing number of councils are putting in place regulations to make rainwater tanks a compulsory addition to new properties. Whilst this won't affect existing properties, ensuring your property has the same facilities as a modern option is never a bad thing.

Reduce your Reliance on Mains Water

In times of drought, it's almost inevitable that restrictions will be placed on what mains water can be used for. Having rainwater stashed away gives you a reserve to use for prohibited or restricted purposes, lessening your reliance on the mains supply.

Why November/December is a Great Time to Install a Rainwater Tank

Here in Northern Rivers, our sub-tropical climate means that rainfall is concentrated in just a few months of the year. Although we've had some really dry years recently (some of the driest on record), when rain does come, it tends to be most frequent between December and April. Installing a rainwater tank in November/December means you're all set to take advantage of the heavier rain when (hopefully) it arrives.
