In this water-saving guide we won’t bore you with common tips like taking shorter showers. After all, you already keep them down to 4 minutes at a time, right? Instead, we’ve put together five top tips to help you save water with smart plumbing and the right appliances once and for all.

Running Water From Faucet In The Bathroom

1. Switch to low-flow shower heads

Switching to a low-flow shower head can reduce your water usage by up to 50% - which is great for those family members who can’t manage the four-minute rule, and even better for those who can. You’ll barely notice the difference and it’s a really simple fix.

According to government guidelines, "For a family of 4, replacing a shower head that flows at 15L/min with a 3-star shower at 9L/min will save 70kL and $210 each year on water bills. Alternatively, replacing it with a 4-star shower at 6L/min will save 105kL and $315 each year on water bills. There will also be savings on energy bills because less water will need to be heated.”

2. Choose dual flush

Your toilet use counts for around 26% of household water consumption. Older style single flush cisterns use a whopping 12 litres of water for each flush. Choosing an Aussie-invented dual flush system, and making sure to use the low flush option as often as possible, can save around 60% of this amount.

3. Install cistern displacement devices

A simple bag of specially formulated crystals can sit in your cistern and reduce the amount of water that rushes out with each flush. It’s another easy solution that takes moments to install and has a huge impact on reducing water waste.

4. Keep an eye on your pipes

A hidden pipe leak could be responsible for wasting a colossal amount of water each year. Luckily, plumbers have some super special kits which means even the most concealed pipe leak can be detected. If you suspect a leak, seek out specialist leak detection services and get the problem sorted.

5. Get a leaky cistern fixed

Another common cause of leaks is the toilet cistern. It’s pretty easy to detect this – all you need is a few drops of food colouring. Pop them in your cistern and check the bowl after an hour or so. If your toilet water shows a hint of this colour, then you can be sure you’ve got a leaky cistern.
